Rí na Mara has been selected to participate in eBay national Retail Expansion Programme The Ebay programme which was launched in Dublin 4th March, is partnered with Enterprise Ireland and DCCOI has been designed to support local Irish businesses in reaching new domestic and global audiences, opening up opportunities with 179 million buyers across the 190 markets in which eBay operates.

The top countries to which Irish professional sellers on eBay currently export are the UK, Germany, the US, Australia and France but on average, Ireland’s professional sellers export to 12 different markets around the world.

Over the coming 12 months, teams at eBay will provide exclusive support to a select number of Irish SME’s who want to expand their online presence.

Positive economic impact

The Irish Retail Expansion Programme was launched by eBay’s Vice President of Global Customer Experience, Derek Allgood who said; “This is the first time that eBay has launched a national programme, but given the success of similar schemes in cities such as Wolverhampton and Akron in Ohio, we are confident that this is going to open up a global window of new and extensive opportunities for SME’s right across the country.  We anticipate that the economic impact from this programme will be significant and a positive contributor to the companies involved, as well as the Irish economy.

“Shopping behaviour is changing and this programme will support those companies that want to complement their high street presence and/or grow their online sales capabilities, but may not have the requisite skills to do so. eBay will help them to sell in the way they want to – online,” said Derek Allgood.

Dynamic sector

Stephen Hughes, Head of Consumer at Enterprise Ireland, said; “Enterprise Ireland is committed to supporting Irish companies to realise their global ambition through mentoring and funding supports.  Ireland’s dynamic retail sector is a primary contributor to our national and regional economies, however international competitors and the acceleration of online trends present significant challenges.  It’s critical that Irish SMEs continue to innovate and become more competitive and resilient.

Connemara’s Rí Na Mara joins pilot programme

Rí Na Mara is a family business based in Connemara that uses locally-harvested seaweed for its range of natural and organic beauty products.  Founded by Deirdre Ui Chathmhaoil in 2004, Deirdre says that the Retail Expansion Programme is an incredible opportunity for her company, which has been looking for new ways to grow for a number of years.

“To have been selected by eBay and Enterprise Ireland means that we now have an opportunity to build our brand globally, which will help us to grow our business, drive sales and potentially, generate new jobs in the Connemara area,” Said Deirdre.

“Rí Na Mara now has an anchor store through eBay.ie and I am already seeing increased interest in the brand simply from our new listing.  eBay is supporting me in areas where I don’t have the experience, resources or capabilities and that’s invaluable.  For example, I now have access to language translation tools to publish our online content in multiple languages such as French, Spanish and German.  This means that we will be portrayed to these markets in the way in which we want our brand to be showcased.  This is really important to brands with provenance and authenticity.  When we are trading online, how we are portrayed and displayed is crucial to the brand’s image and ultimately, its sales.”

Deirdre today joined other businesses for their first formal training and networking session at eBay covering eBay selling basics, marketing, online customer experience, the benefits of cross border trade as well as Search Engine Optimisation training and promotional support.

The partnership will see eBay provide the following support to Irish SME’s taking part in the Retail Expansion Programme:

  • Onboarding assistance: one-on-one support to create a personalised eBay shop with listing support and guidance.
    • Training: Retail Expansion sellers will participate in a comprehensive training programme that covers eBay selling basics, strategies for getting the most out of eBay’s platform as well as digital skills such as search & listing optimisation and online advertising.
    • Store Subscription:  Sellers will receive a complimentary one-year Premium store subscription, which offers free listings, shipping supplies and other valuable perks.
    • Promotional support – eBay will highlight and help drive traffic to participating sellers’ eBay stores.
    • Dedicated customer services support:  Sellers in the programme have access to a dedicated customer service team that will provide strategic guidance and troubleshooting support to enable their growth on eBay.
